Isabella’s family stared at her in stunned silence. People wheeled suitcases past them. Blasts of warm spring air hit her with each open and close of the glass entrance doors.

“But, Isabella…” Her father paled. Rarely had she spoken so plainly as she had minutes ago. She’d announced her intentions. She’d stay with Marcos—as his partner.

“Marcos? Yes, he is good to you. But he is your brother-in-law.” Her mother’s face crumbled as if Isabella had told her she was pregnant with the Judas’s child.

Her father shook his head for the hundredth time. “No. Imposible. We go home today. All of us.”

“Papi, please. Mamá.” She grasped her mother’s wrist, a silent plea to help her father understand.

“You were happy at home. Your father was so proud of you, joining the family business.” Her mother joined her father’s head shaking move. “And the children, they miss you.”

“Yes, I loved working with the schoolchildren, but please understand. Marcos is my life.”

Her mother frowned. “The Church says you have ‘affinity’ with Marcos. He is considered your brother. You cannot be ‘with’ your brother. Oh, my God, Isabella, is he even Catholic? Jorge was. But Marcos?”

Her mother finally raised her eyes with that last question. Yes, Mamá believed she was entering into an incestuous relationship with the devil.

“Hey, Mark’s not bad, a little uptight…” Jose stopped his words upon seeing his father’s face.

“You knew this.” Her father glared at Jose, who immediately stood.

“Sorry sis, you’re on your own.” Her brother backed away.

Mamá rooted in her purse. “We have a ticket for you.”

“No, Mamá, please. I’ll take a cab home.”

“They have cabs that go all the way to Miami?” Her father asked.

“Papi, you know what I mean.”

“No, Isabella. I will not allow you to do this to your life.”

“I am a grown woman.”

“Then act like one.”

“Fine. I’ll go check you out. Jose, you’ll get the luggage?” She couldn’t argue with her family anymore. She was beyond done. She turned and headed to the front desk.

It was time for her family to return to Miami without her. It was time for her to return to Mark. She wouldn’t leave him, not after being separated for all the wrong reasons. Her second chance awaited.

Her life had clicked, quickly and irrevocably, into a groove in less than two days. It was familiar, yet so new. She was sure God had designed this new life for her, as if she was born to be Marcos’s partner. God had merely needed to put her back in her Master’s path.

“Ready to check out, miss?” The young clerk’s cherubic face cracked into an experienced smile.

“Yes, the Sandovals, my family…”

“Ah, yes. Delightful family. Your mother, especially.” He tapped on his keyboard.

Yes, her mother likely had slathered the charm on every staff member. After all, being pleasing was how you got along in the world, right? Well, no more. Today wasn’t a day to be pleasing. Today was a day to stand up for her life as she should have done all along.

She now understood a proverb she’d overheard from her mother.
